The via ferrata Eterna is a long ferrata ascending the eastern summit of the Marmolada ridgeline, the Punta Serauta at 2962m. It’s called the eternal long via ferrata and runs along the north ridge.
Depending on the year and season, there may be snow and ice up high.
On the start the via ferrata begins the hardest section of the route (D) with a degree of difficulty far superior to the rest of the ferrata and deserves a proper assessment of capabilities.
Afterwards step for step you arrive to the first Peak. Now you continue along the ridge where you walk up and down to the second station of the Marmolada Cable Car.
The upper portion of the route weaves its way through extensive World War 1 fortifications. In fact the route was established during the war to access these fortifications. More soldiers died from avalanche and cold exposure than from bombs or bullets on this part of the front.
Contrary to many other well-equipped paths, the final destination is not the classic panoramic summit but a Monumental Zone witnessing the Great War worth visiting and respecting.
There is also the Great War Museum at the Punta Serauta cable car station.
Total time ascent: 5h. 900 Hm.
Starting point:
Drive up to Passo Fedaia and park at the East end of the lake near the Rifugio passo Fedaia.
Downhill – 2 possibility:
- – with the cable car from Serauta to Malga Ciapela, from where it is necessary to somehow return to Fedaia’s pass.
- – when you descend the glacier you will need crampons and ice ax
